‘Leading Learning’ – Leadership Training to Enhance CPD

We know that improving the quality of teaching and learning in the classroom has the biggest impact on student outcomes. As Dylan Wiliam states, “In England, as far as academic achievement is concerned, as long as you go to school, it doesn’t matter very much which school you go to. But it matters a great deal which teachers you get in that school.”

Right now in schools, we have teachers and school leaders grappling with new national qualifications and curricula at every key stage and phase. In many schools, issues with teacher recruitment and budget constraints have compounded the problem. Keep the main the thing main thing – improving teaching and learning – is no easy feat.

So where do we turn for support to improve teaching and learning? Of course, the expert knowledge of our existing staff will always be the beating heart of improving teaching, sharing what we know and making tweaks to our daily practice. Crucially though, as the DfE Teachers’ Professional Development Standard states, we also need robust expert challenge and to ensure that our CPD is underpinned by sound evidence.

Research evidence is too often held at arm’s length from the classroom because teachers are simply too busy, whilst the research isn’t well written for busy teachers. As the work of the Education Endowment Foundation has shown, there is an appetite for good evidence of ‘best bets’ to support schools in tricky times.

Huntington Research School, part of the national Research School Network, run by the EEF, and the Institute for Effective Education based at York University, is running ‘Leading Learning’ training for school leaders, to ‘enhance teaching and learning with evidence-based practice’.

This innovative programme provides an overview of the most important research evidence in education, with usable tools to devise a high impact CPD programme, covering pertinent topics such as metacognition, memory and mindsets. The training is designed for leaders of teaching and learning in schools, TSAs and MATs; potential or existing Research-leads; SLEs; and aspiring senior leaders. Already, schools from all primary and secondary phases have booked onto the course.

If you want to book your place for one of the few available places, then please go to our EVENTS page. If you want to find out more about the training, or opportunities to work with Huntington Research School, contact us by email at huntresearchsch@gmail.com.
